The Way of Pilgrimage An Adventure in Spiritual Formation for the Next Generation
Pilgrimage is not about the destination; it's about the journey.
The Way of Pilgrimage is an addition to the Companions in Christ series, published by Upper Room Books. This experiential, 30-week study fosters the spiritual formation of senior-high youth and college freshmen. Through engaging in ancient spiritual practices of prayer and contemplation, young people discover new ways to go deeper spiritually.
This is a great resource to help young people deepen and mature their faith, and it is user-friendly for volunteers, youth leaders, college chaplains, and students. It can be used in small groups or cell groups, Sunday school classes, various youth groups settings, camp and retreat settings, or even to prepare the hearts and minds of young people before a mission trip or pilgrimage. The following six-week Participant's Books include scripture, daily exercises, and readings. One Leader's Guide prepares you for guiding participants along the entire 30-week pilgrimage.
The Way of Pilgrimage: Choosing Pilgrimage
Pilgrims are invited to the journey through the faces of God's grace in scripture and in the stories of Christians through the ages who have been awakened to grace. While recognizing the hindrances to being on pilgrimage, we also recognize pilgrimage as a journey to the heart of God.
The Way of Pilgrimage: The Bible: Pilgrimage Travel Guide
Pilgrims learn to recognize scripture as a guide for the pilgrimage, as the story of fellow pilgrims, and as a place to make their home through study, meditation, directing imagination, and group meditation.

The Way of Pilgrimage: Prayer: Heart of the Pilgrimage
In the heart of the resource, prayer is the main activity on the journey that leads to the heart of God. Through exploring barriers to prayer, different prayer methods, and creative ways to pray, pilgrims expand their knowledge of and ability to connect through prayer.
The Way of Pilgrimage: Companions on the Pilgrimage
Pilgrims learn about the cloud of witnesses who have gone before us, and who accompany us, on our present-day journey. Spiritual friendship, spiritual direction and mentoring, small groups, and spiritual companions give pilgrims confidence along the way.
The Way of Pilgrimage: Stepping into the World
After looking at life through the eyes of a pilgrim, recognizing their own faith stories and gifts, and exploring vocation as the call of God to be radically available to God in who we are and in what we do, pilgrims are sent out into the world with a sense of purpose.
The Way of Pilgrimage: Leader's Guide
The Leader's Guide provides structure and content for the weekly one-and-a-quarter-hour group experiences. Each session includes Welcoming, Noticing, Moving from Head2Heart, Naming, and Blessing and Sending Forth, all of which are explained in-depth in the guide. This additional resource is simple and user-friendly, enabling volunteers, youth leaders, college chaplains, and/or students to lead the sessions.
"The Way of Pilgrimage is a wonderful doorway into the spiritual life. Like the bountiful feast that God sets before us, these volumes are full of wisdom and blessing. Those who accept the challenge to walk with Christ would benefit greatly from this guide. It's exercises are both simple and rich. At every point, the members of the group are encouraged to journey into the heart of God."
- Rev. Daniel Wolpert, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Crookston, and Co-Director Minnesota Institute of Contemplation and Healing (MICAH)
"I love this resource. Your youth and young adults will be fascinated and intrigued as they engage in this journey through spiritual practices. This is the resource you've been praying for; it's filled with the richness and depth that we've come to expect from the Upper Room."
- Bo Prosser, Coordinator for Congregational Life, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship
"While many youth resources try to 'wow' kids into belief, The Way of Pilgrimage takes kids on journey and forms them as disciples. This is a resource that understands that youth are much more ready to 'go deep' in their faith than we sometimes think. I look forward to adding this to the resources we use with our youth here."
- Rev. Jay Voorhees, Sr. Pastor, Antioch United Methodist Church, Antioch, Tennessee
